FAIR funders are teaming up to drive FAIR behaviour.

FAIR funders are teaming up to drive FAIR behaviour.

A number of funders met in Leiden,  early September 2019, in order to discuss the necessary structure to drive researchers and data stewards towards producing the appropriate Data Management Plans (DMP’s) , using the right metadata templates  and making their (meta)datafiles FAIR.

Funders from the US (Gates Foundation), UK (Wellcome Trust), Ireland (HRB) , NL (Zon MW and NWO), Germany (DFG), Scandinavia (Nordforsk) and Brazil (Fiocruz) attended the meeting. In addition, supporting slides from Science Europe were presented.

It is foreseen that funders in the future may insist on FAIRness as a condition for approving grant-applications, thereby  offering tangeable monetary benefits for researchers and institutes who adhere to the FAIR Principles. In anticipation of this, an FAIR Funders Implementation Study (FFIS) has been initiated with the aim to gain experience in an Implementation Network. A manifesto is in preparation and several parties have been asked to define and design a small pilot.

Please, check out an instructive Video about the FFIS concept
