Open Science Working Group of The Guild of European Research Intensive Universities
On 13 March, The Guild held its first Open Science working group meeting. The working group gathers representatives from Guild member universities oversee Open Science strategies and implementation in their institutions.
Together with Stephan Kuster, Secretary-General of Science Europe, the group discussed ‘Plan S’ and the challenges and opportunities for the development of Open Access. The group also considered the role universities should play in the implementation of ‘Plan S’ and how to support scholarly-centred and sustainable Open Access publishing models that maximise the benefits of research.
The group recognised that Open Access can be embraced only as part of a greater cultural change required to support Open Science and discussed other interlinked topics such as the role of data, rewards and incentives, copyright issues, and international alignment.
In particular, Paolo Budroni from the European Open Science Cloud (EOSC) Secretariat and University of Vienna, presented the EOSC, its tangible added value and how The Guild can engage with its development.
Finally, the group discussed priority areas for the next meetings, which include both policy-related issues and areas for best practice sharing.
